Only 3 hours drive away from Dublin you can enjoy this beautiful vista of the Atlantic Ocean at the Cliffs of Moher. Not only that, but you will be stunned by the magnificence of these rocks that emerged from the ocean 320 million years ago.
The Cliffs of Moher have been attracting millions of tourists in recent years & also had been on my list for quite a long time. Now, that I finally had the chance to visit them I wanted to share my experience and some tips on how to have the best time there!
Tip #1: Hire an agency
Most of you would say “That’s boring!”. However, in Ireland hiring an agency to the Cliffs of Moher is not boring at all. Actually, it can turn out to be the best choice you ever made here.
The thing is that if you want to go on by yourself you can do it by train, bus or car. I will be honest with you and let you know that all these 3 can be quite expensive there. Also, getting to the Cliffs of Moher from almost any city in the country is about 120-180 miles of driving (200-300km). That can be tiring, so consider this when planning you trip.
By the way I went to the Cliffs of Moher with the help of Paddywagon and I have to say that it was AWESOME!!! The tour itself is extremely well organized, full of fun & jokes (sometimes on you) and freeing you from almost any responsibility. So, go check them out!
Tip #2: Check the forecast
Yes, you gotta do this! Simply, because the weather there can be quite unpredictable. And as Irish people like to say: “Is iomaí athrú a chuireann lá Márta dhe” or “there is a lot of weather in a March day”. This is also applicable for any other day of the year.
On a clear day you can spot the Aran islands.
Tip #3: Wear proper clothes
“What do you mean by wearing proper clothes?!” I exclaimed once. Well, first of all, wear comfortable and if possible waterproof shoes, or in other words – tourist shoes. Get yourself at least 2 T-shirts, sweater, pants and a windproof jacket. Trust me, you can’t predict the weather there.
Tip #4: Careful on the edges
BEWARE! For real this time. BEWARE!
There is no “YOLO” here. You have to be really careful and cautious, simply because cliffs are falling.
The Cliffs of Moher are made of hardened sand, silt and mud. Does this sound like solid ground to you? It doesn’t, right? Then, be really careful when approaching any edge there.
Tip #5: Explore the place
Yeah, go around or round & round. Make time to just sit & stare, cause the view is breathtaking. Like, truly breathtaking.
Actually, I’ve been told that the best way to explore the Cliffs is to take the right path. I have to admit, I have not been disappointed.
Tip #6: Look around for Puffins
The Cliffs of Moher are the home of many sea birds like Kittiwakes, Herring Gulls & Puffins. Actually, it holds the largest Puffin colony in whole Ireland.
Every year at the end of March, Puffins come back to the Cliffs and claim it their home for the summer. During this time, you can see them play around, eat and look after their chicks.
Tip #7: Check the Visitor's Center
At last, you may head to the Visitor’s Center where the story of the Cliffs of Moher is brought back to life. You can enjoy this eco-friendly museum divided in themes like Rock, Ocean, Nature & Man & have some fun before heading back home.
